I’m getting ready to try making my own soap. The recipe I’ve picked calls for Tallow (basically melted down-Rendered Beef Suet/Fat; I’m using Suet). So today I made my own Tallow! Decided to post my adventures as I was really nervous about doing this and felt a bit lost. As I type this, my tallow is cooling on the back porch.. However, I just found an AWESOME video on YouTube that I’d wish I’d seen yesterday!
No idea how much Suet is needed to get the amount of Tallow I want.. So I started out with (2)-5.5lb bags of Beef Suet that my meat market sold @ .99 lb, they also ground it up for me so I didn’t have to go through the mess of cutting it up!
I decided to do it in a crockpot, with water and salt added. Started with 2 crockpots and 1 of the 5.5lb bags. I’ll do the next 5.5lb later today.. Wasn’t as scary as I thought. Below are the pics I snapped with my phone throughout the process:
